SANTA CLARA – It’s been a 31-week, spell-binding procession to get the 49ers from last season’s NFC Championship trauma to their next shot at a Super Bowl run. They’ll start Sunday in Pittsburgh, on the other side of the Keystone State from where Brock Purdy and his teammates got waylaid by the Eagles, 31-7, in the NFC Championship Game.Alas, a new playoff push is afoot. Fiction“After the First Death,” Robert CormierI read Robert Cormier’s young adult novels when I was a young adult. At the time they — especially “The Chocolate War,” “I Am the Cheese,” and “After the First Death” — were among the most frightening and upsetting books I’d ever encountered. I’ve been rereading them recently, and they still are. They’re all about authority figures who are eager to manipulate and betray adolescents for their own purposes. As such, they provide excruciating metaphorical lessons about larger-scale human politics, lessons you don’t want to learn but have to. For me, “After the First Death” is the most disturbing of them all, with its title taken from the last line of a poem by Dylan Thomas: “After the first death, there is no other.” OR IS THERE.

El gobernador de California, Gavin New...Russia’s Putin sits down for talks with Turkish leader Erdogan aimed at reviving the Ukraine grain export deal

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — If there was a silver lining to the U.S. World Cup team losing to Lithuania, it’s this: The Americans now truly know how painful it is to watch another national team line up against a nation that has won four consecutive Olympic gold medals and celebrate in its face.As one might guess, they didn’t enjoy that feeling. And if it happens again at this World Cup, it’ll be much, much worse.Monday was a back-to-reality day for the U.S., one day after its undefeated summer run ended with a 110-104 loss to Lithuania to end the second round of the World Cup. A quarterfinal game against Italy awaits on Tuesday, with the U.S. — like all the teams in the Round of 8 — knowing the only way to win gold in Manila is to win every game the rest of the way.“It makes it real,” U.S. guard Austin Reaves said. “Obviously, now, it’s lose or go home. We see the reactions. We obviously know that everybody wants to beat us in particular. We see the joy that they get from that. That t...Latest news
