By Colleen Long | Associated PressWASHINGTON — President Joe Biden plans to skip the annual climate talks in Dubai this week, an event that is expected to draw heads of state and diplomats from roughly 200 nations and the Vatican. He has attended twice before. The White House said it was sending a climate team, including Special Envoy John Kerry, climate adviser Ali Zaidi and clean energy adviser John Podesta.“Although we don’t have any travel updates to share for the president at this time, the administration looks forward to a robust and productive COP28,” said White House spokesman Angelo Fernández Hernández, adding that Biden’s team would continue to build on the administration actions “to tackle the climate crisis.”Biden had also pledged to visit Africa before the end of the year, but that trip doesn’t appear to be happening, either. Holidays 2023: 10 Bay Area ‘Nutcrackers’ and other dances to catch

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 09:01:03 GMT

As the stain of violence convulses the Holy Land, the innocence and playfulness of the conflict at the center of “The Nutcracker” provides the seasonal diversion we need. The holiday staple, which unfolds during and after a party Christmas Eve, is indestructible and supremely malleable, delivering the fundamental pleasures of ballet whether set in Vienna, San Francisco, San Jose, London, or a small German town (where the original E.T.A. Hoffmann short story “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” takes place). There are more than a dozen “Nutcracker” productions in the Bay Area alone this year, and the one thing they all have in common is some version of Tchaikovsky’s enchanting score. More than a cultural experience, “The Nutcracker” has taken on a singular role as a holiday tradition for families, a vivid introduction to dance and classical music for children, and an economic lifeline for dance companies large and small. It’s not the only seasonal dance mainstay but it’s ballet’s winter...

Meghan Markle might not ‘care’ about the environment, so she should be free to use private jets, Omid Scobie seems to argue

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 09:01:03 GMT

With excerpts and reviews emerging for “Endgame,” the explosive new royal expose, it’s becoming clear why Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have tried, not too successfully, to distance themselves from author Omid Scobie, the journalist who has been described as their “friendly biographer,” or even their “cheerleader, crusader and chum.”As the New York Times review said, Scobie has done Meghan and Harry “no favors” in his efforts to portray them in the most glowing light possible. But his portrait, critics suggest, is rather shallow, one-sided and not always effective. As the Times said, Scobie devotes much of his book to “setting the record straight on petty slights” made against the California-based couple by Harry’s royal relatives or by the U.K. media. In just one example of clumsy score settling, Scobie tried to defend the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s controversial use of private jets in a splashy intervi...

Denver Broncos are relevant heading into December for the first time since 2016

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 09:01:03 GMT

DENVER (AP) — For the first time in seven seasons, the Denver Broncos will head into December with a winning record, something that seemed unfathomable when they stumbled to a 1-5 start. In their first month under Sean Payton, the Broncos (6-5) lost three games at home to underdogs — the Raiders, Commanders and Jets — who are a combined 10-22 against other opponents.Of course, their worst loss was that 70-20 meltdown in Miami in Week 3 when they surrendered 10 touchdowns — one more than they’ve given up in their last six games combined. They put together their most complete game yet in their 29-12 rout of the Browns (7-4), neutralizing Myles Garrett and the league’s best defense, thwarting Cleveland’s vaunted ground game, recovering three fumbles and scoring three red zone touchdowns, which has been their bugaboo.“There were a lot of things we did that I was pleased with,” the notoriously nitpicking Payton said after moving above .500 for the first time with the Bron...

Biden says he’s helped lower inflation as he hosts first meeting of his new supply chain council

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 09:01:03 GMT

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden on Monday opened the first meeting of his supply chain resilience council by warning companies against price gouging and saying that his administration was working to lower costs for U.S. families.“We know that prices are still too high for too many things, that times are still too tough for too many families,” Biden said. “But we’ve made progress.”The president has blamed inflation on issues such as supply chains and Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, while Republican lawmakers say the run-up in prices was triggered by the $1.9 trillion in coronavirus relief that Democrat Biden signed into law in 2021.Biden used the council meeting to announce 30 actions to improve access to medicine and needed economic data as well as other programs tied to the production and shipment of goods. He said he was tackling “junk fees,” hidden charges that companies sneak into bills just because they can and customers have no alternative. The council foll...
