A conversation with Larry Vuckovich can feel like sneaking backstage at a nightclub to eavesdrop on your favorite musicians.A mainstay on the Bay Area jazz scene for more than six decades, the pianist has spent his career accompanying some of jazz’s most acclaimed artists, while recording an influential body of work as a leader. At 87, he’s an essential link to a rapidly receding era, which he recalls in detail with bon mottes, jokes and insights shared by his colleagues, and he wants to make sure that the giants who inspired and encouraged him get their due.Vuckovich returns to Yoshi’s in Oakland on Dec. 27 for a concert celebrating the centennial of tenor sax titan Dexter Gordon (1923-1990), whose 100th birthday passed quietly last Feb. 27. A formative experience playing with Gordon in Copenhagen’s Club Montmartre left an indelible mark on Vuckovich. In the midst of several months traveling and performing around Europe in 1963, he passed a master class in accompaniment during the ...49ers’ Deebo Samuel on scoring spree as Ravens come to town for Christmas

SANTA CLARA — Deebo Samuel acknowledges he’s in the most productive stretch of his 49ers career, scoring more touchdowns than even Christian McCaffrey over the past four games.“It’s just crazy, because every time I get the ball, I try to score,” Samuel said Thursday. “It’s just tending to happen a lot right now.”Not that the 49ers are lacking points from others, but Samuel’s goal-line gumption could prove critical Monday when the 49ers (11-3) host the Baltimore Ravens (11-3), in a matchup pitting teams currently atop their respective conference standings, with three weeks until the playoffs.San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel (19) makes a touchdown catch against Baltimore Ravens cornerback Marcus Peters (24) and cornerback Brandon Carr in the first half of an NFL football game, Sunday, Dec. 1, 2019, in Baltimore, Md. By Julia Frankel | Associated PressJERUSALEM — The Israeli military campaign in Gaza, experts say, now sits among the deadliest and most destructive in history. In just over two months, the offensive has wreaked more destruction than the razing of Syria’s Aleppo between 2012 and 2016, Ukraine’s Mariupol or, proportionally, the Allied bombing of Germany in World War II. It has killed more civilians than the U.S.-led coalition did in its three-year campaign against the Islamic State group. The Israeli military has said little about what kinds of bombs and artillery it is using in Gaza. But from blast fragments found on-site and analyses of strike footage, experts are confident that the vast majority of bombs dropped on the besieged enclave are U.S.-made. They say the weapons include 2,000-pound (900-kilogram) “bunker-busters” that have killed hundreds in densely populated areas. With the Palestinian death toll in Gaza approaching 20,000, the international communit...Sale closed in Monte Sereno: $2.5 million for a three-bedroom home
